RED DEVILS NOT ABLE TO GET BY TIGERS

Coach Dennis Black took over the Elkmont program several years ago.  His efforts to instill his philosophy and work ethic into his players finally bore fruit this year.

The Red Devils improved throughout the year and reached the sub-regional for the first time since Garth Garris' 2012 team.  Elkmont wasn't able to get over the final hurdle for a spot in the the Northwest Regional but did finish with a 17-13 record for this season.

Lauderdale County 55, Elkmont 41
The Elkmont side of the gym was packed to watch the their team match up with the Lauderdale County Tigers.  The Red Devils came out tight and their normal play wasn't to be found. Mistakes, lack of rebounds and shots that rolled off the rim led to the Red Devils being behind 31-14 at the half.

However, Elkmont regrouped and seemed to find their rhythm.  As so often this season, they clawed back into the game, trimming the margin to 39-31 after three quarters.

The Elkmont faithful thought that perhaps, just perhaps, the Red Devils might be able to pull the game out of the hat one more time. However, it was not to be and the Tigers were able to pull away in the final minutes for the win.

GOING TO SUBSTATE

The third time is the charm. For Elkmont, two games with fifth-ranked East Lawrence resulted in split. Last night's matchup was better still and the stakes were much more significant.

The Red Devils stunned East Lawrence 58-51 Thursday night on East Lawrence's home floor in the Class 3A, Area 15 tournament title game. With the win, Elkmont hosts a Class 3A Northwest sub-regional postseason game Tuesday, while East Lawrence will be on the road.

“What a tournament by our guys,” Elkmont coach Dennis Black said. “Great effort by these young men. They pulled together and made it happen.”

Since the postseason began, Elkmont has been the team of late theatrics. That trend continued. Trailing by seven after three periods, Elkmont rallied late, outscoring East Lawrence 23-15 in the final period.

“This team believes in one another,” Chance Bailey said. “What else can I say? When everything is on the line, we rally around each other. We believe this team can overcome anything. Oh yeah. We can get to Wallace (State for the Northwest Regional),” Bailey said. “That’s the next goal. That’s what we’re playing for next.”

RED DEVILS IN AREA 15 FINALS

The Elkmont guard knew the deck was stacked against him. The probability of intentionally missing a free throw, getting the rebound and making a game-tying bucket are incredibly slim. Too many things must perfectly fall into place. Bailey completed the near impossible, making a series of highly improbable events occur in the final seconds of regulation as Elkmont rallied past West Morgan 67-60 in overtime Tuesday night in the Class 3A, Area 15 boys basketball tournament semifinals.

After watching West Morgan use a 9-0 run in the final minutes of regulation to take a three-point lead, Chance Bailey caught a pass on the wing with 10.7 seconds remaining to attempt a potential game-tying 3-pointer. But Bailey never got the shot off. West Morgan fouled the Elkmont guard before he began his shooting motion, sending him to the foul line to attempt a pair of free throws.

That meant the odds were stacked heavily against Elkmont. The Red Devils’ only shot at forcing overtime was to have Bailey make his first free throw, intentionally miss the second, hope a teammate grabs the rebound and score before the final buzzer. For Elkmont, everything played out perfectly. On his second free throw attempt, Bailey’s shot took a hard bounce off the back of the rim, which caused a long rebound that landed in a teammate’s hands. The put back attempt fell through the rim, and Elkmont kept its season alive by forcing an improbable overtime. Elkmont didn’t let the opportunity go to waste. Bailey drained two 3-pointers in overtime, scoring five of his 18 points in the extra period.

“What happened at the end of the game, you never see that happen. You’ve got to have some good fortune on your side. It was pretty incredible. This is one I definitely won’t forget. Crazy game but wow, what a fun night to be playing basketball” Bailey said.

Elkmont advances to face tournament host and fifth-ranked East Lawrence on Thursday in the Area 15 title game @ 7:30 pm East Lawrence and Elkmont split two regular-season meetings.

“These guys played incredibly hard,” Coach Black said. “Had to overcome a lot to keep the season alive. But these kids stuck together and pulled through it, and found a way to win a pretty entertaining game.”

SEASON ENDS FOR LADY DEVILS IN AREA 15 TOURNAMENT

The area tournaments see the end of many teams'   seasons.  Unfortunately, this is true for our Lady Devils.

East Lawrence 46, Elkmont 31
Haley Hutto led the Eagles with 14 points and 10 rebounds to send East Lawrence (17-9) to the 3A, Area 15 championship game. Emma Bates led Elkmont with nine points.

As time passes, so does the sport season.  Many of them have now hung up the basketball shoes and are getting out the softball gear, track shoes or soccer cleats. Best of luck to the Lady Devils in their spring sports.
