The Elkmont guard knew the deck was stacked against him. The probability of intentionally missing a free throw, getting the rebound and making a game-tying bucket are incredibly slim. Too many things must perfectly fall into place. Bailey completed the near impossible, making a series of highly improbable events occur in the final seconds of regulation as Elkmont rallied past West Morgan 67-60 in overtime Tuesday night in the Class 3A, Area 15 boys basketball tournament semifinals.
After
watching West Morgan use a 9-0 run in the final minutes of regulation
to take a three-point lead, Chance Bailey caught a pass on the wing with 10.7
seconds remaining to attempt a potential game-tying 3-pointer. But
Bailey never got the shot off. West Morgan fouled the Elkmont guard
before he began his shooting motion, sending him to the foul line to
attempt a pair of free throws.
That meant the odds were stacked heavily against Elkmont. The Red Devils’ only shot at forcing overtime was to have Bailey make his first free throw, intentionally miss the second, hope a teammate grabs the rebound and score before the final buzzer. For Elkmont, everything played out perfectly. On his second free throw attempt, Bailey’s shot took a hard bounce off the back of the rim, which caused a long rebound that landed in a teammate’s hands. The put back attempt fell through the rim, and Elkmont kept its season alive by forcing an improbable overtime. Elkmont didn’t let the opportunity go to waste. Bailey drained two 3-pointers in overtime, scoring five of his 18 points in the extra period.

“What
happened at the end of the game, you never see that happen. You’ve got to have some good fortune on your side. It was pretty
incredible. This is one I definitely won’t forget. Crazy game but wow, what a fun night to be playing basketball” Bailey
said.
Elkmont advances to face tournament host and fifth-ranked East Lawrence on Thursday in the Area 15 title game @ 7:30 pm East Lawrence and Elkmont split two regular-season meetings.
“These
guys played incredibly hard,” Coach Black said. “Had to overcome a lot to
keep the season alive. But these kids stuck together and pulled through
it, and found a way to win a pretty entertaining game.”
