MEMPHIS TEAMS BEATS ELKMONT RED DEVILS BY TWO

The Elkmont Red Devils played the George Washington Carver Cobras (803 students) in their second game in the Seymour, Tennessee Christmas Tournament, Dec. 28.  The Cobras sported a roster of talented run, jump athletes, much like the Tanner Rattlers.  The Cobra point guard, Clarence Wilson, is the quickest and best point guard the Red Devils have played this year.  After a mostly half court game for three quarters, Elkmont turned up the intensity in the fourth quarter.  Starting at 2:29 left in the game, the Devils made a run and closed a ten point lead (50 - 50) on a Hayden Huseth three point shot at 9.6 seconds left on the clock.  Elkmont was whistled for a foul and the Cobras went to the line with three seconds left, sinking 2 for 2 freethrows.  Skyler Gant flew up the court and threw up a last second shot that banged off the backboard but didn't score as the Red Devils lost 52 - 50.  Skyler Gant turned in his best game of the season with 19 points, 3 assists and 7 rebounds.  Cole Glass had 12 points and 9 rebounds and Daniel Logan, 10 points and 6 rebounds.

Elkmont played well against the Cobras.  They didn't turn the ball over and only had 9 turnovers for the game.  Their shot selection was good.  Elkmont had a good shooting night except for three point shots. The G.W. Carver coach evidently did some scouting the night before since they came out in a defense designed to cut down the number of three pointers Hayden Huseth could shoot.  He went 1 for 2 (scoring only 3 points for the night) in comparison to the night before where he went 5 for 10 and had 21 points.  The Elkmont 2-3 zone was effective since the Cobras scored most of its points in the paint.  Clarence Wilson (point guard) picked apart the 1-3-1  for several easy layups.  The man defense seemed to be more effective.  The Red Devils were also out-rebounded by the taller G.W. Carver team.  Overall, the Red Devils put together another exciting game and almost pulled another win out of the hat.  Their record goes to 9-4 with another game tomorrow against the host team, the Seymour Eagles.
