VARSITY BOYS: Fifth Seed
Tanner had a strong third quarter to defeat Elkmont, 58-46, in the opening round of the boys Limestone County Tournament on January 22. Tanner, the tournament's No. 4 seed, led 30-25 at halftime, but outscored the Red Devils, 18-7, in the third quarter to pull away. Patrick Jobman had a big night for Elkmont, scoring 24 points, but no other Red Devils player scored in double figures, with Ben Hobbs being the next highest scorer with nine points.
VARSITY GIRLS: Sixth Seed
Elkmont gave the third-seeded Colts all they could handle in the first round of the tournament. Trailing 24-20 early in the third quarter, they went on an 11-0 run to take a 31-24 lead. However, Elkmont's hot 3-point shooting cut the lead to 37-34 after three quarters. Clements started the fourth quarter strongly to extend the lead back out to 49-38, but Elkmont went on a quick 11-3 run to trim the lead to 52-49 after Raleigh Wallace hit a 3-pointer with 2:15 remaining. Some no calls, missed shots, and Clements final free throw sealed the Lady Devils fate with a 55-49 loss.
“Elkmont played great, and a lot of credit goes to
them,” Zach Meadows said. “They played with a lot of energy. It's their home
court, they're hosting the tournament, and they came out with a lot of
passion and emotion. I thought they outplayed us a lot of the game.”
The Red Devils 30 points from 3-pointers as a team. Raleigh Wallace led Elkmont with 15 points on five 3-point baskets. Bailee Vining added 13 points; Haven Kirby tallied 11.
