ELKMONT RALLIES TO WIN IN OVERTIME

HANCEVILLE — Dan Logan’s yellow Mohawk was a bright blur as he sprinted toward the Elkmont High student section.  Pounding his chest while pointing into the stands, Logan knew that Elkmont’s celebration wasn’t about to end. His unexpected 3-pointer in overtime all but assured it.  Logan’s bucket was the finishing touch on a thrilling comeback. Elkmont erased a 16-point first-half deficit to beat Holly Pond 72-62 in the Class 3A boys Northwest Regional semifinals Thursday afternoon at Wallace State-Hanceville.
Elkmont (22-7) advances to face Carbon Hill in the regional final Saturday.

“This is history for Elkmont,” Red Devils coach Garth Garris said. “This is the first time we’ve ever been to (a regional final). These guys battled to get here. We’ve won a lot of close games this year, so I knew the guys weren’t going to give up.”

Holly Pond vs ElkmontLogan played the way he looks. Radical. The 6-foot, 216-pound big man with the Mohawk dominated after halftime, scoring 16 of his 21 points. He also finished with eight rebounds, two steals and two assists.  “When we got up by five, our crowd went crazy,” Logan said. “There was no doubt in my mind when that happened. I knew we were going to win when that happened.”

Getting to that point wasn’t easy. Thomas Hays and Colby Adams sank a couple of shots early as Holly Pond raced out to a 16-point lead by the midway point of the second period. The Broncos led 37-28 at halftime.  Adams poured in 17 points to lead Holly Pond (29-8).

“It wasn’t a pretty locker room at halftime,” Garris said. “You’re happy to be here, but when you’ve got an opportunity to advance, you’ve got to take advantage of it. We played a lot better, with a lot more intensity, in the second half.”

The Red Devils closed out regulation with a 10-4 run.
Cole Glass scored on a put back to tie the score at 62 with 7.6 seconds remaining in regulation.   Overtime was all Elkmont. Matthew Barnes nailed a jumper on the opening possession and Logan followed with a 3-pointer, sparking a 10-0 to seal the win. Skyler Gant led Elkmont with 24 points and nine rebounds. Glass added 10 points and seven rebounds.
