WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT HOLLY POND? PART 2

Holly Pond 75, Winston County 30: In Mitch Morris’ words, the Broncos got off to a “slow start” at home in their first-round area tournament matchup with the Yellow Jackets.

If leading 21-4 by the end of the first quarter is considered slow by the coach, then all of Holly Pond’s players should consider trying out for the track team as they’d likely be able to wipe out the competition.

“Our offense was clicking pretty well, and we were able to get some big shots,” Morris said.

After looking to pass early in the ballgame, Bryant Sparks found his shot, knocked down a few baskets from behind the arc and found his way to the rim to account for a game-high 18 points.

Morris said Sparks also created multiple opportunities on the defensive side of the ball by being a pesky defender and snagging a few steals.

Thomas Hays joined the party with 10 points, Gunter Morris tacked on eight, and Colby Adams and Carter Hays had seven apiece.

As impressed as he was with the team’s offensive efforts, he was even happier with what they were able to accomplish on the defensive side of the court. The Broncos gave up only four points in the first quarter, two in the third quarter and seven in the last eight minutes.

The host team can now look ahead to Monday’s area title game against Vinemont, which will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.

“We’re going to have to play good basketball,” Morris said. “We beat them twice already this season and neither one of them were easy. We’ll get a really good day of practice in on Sunday and get ready to battle Vinemont on Monday.”
