IS RED DEVIL SCORING SLUMP OVER?

East Limestone beat Elkmont,  83-78, in double overtime.  However, the silver lining is that Elkmont may have found out how to play again.

Cole Glass got the tip at the start of the game, Elkmont raced down the court for an easy layup that didn't happen.  The Red Devils got the rebound, got the rare second shot and had an open three but again Elkmont came up empty.  Between sloppy play, mediocre defense and subpar shooting,  the Devils scored 13 points in the first quarter and managed to add 11 more in the second quarter for a half time score of 40-24.

The third quarter was more of the same and at 1:26, the game looked grim as Elkmont trailed 52-32.  However, the light finally switched on and the Red Devils team from earlier in the season showed up. Skyler Gant stole the ball, threw it to Logan who whipped it to Wales for an easy lay up.  Gant quickly drained a three pointer that was followed by another by Hayden Huseth.  The fourth quarter opened with Daniel Logan throwing in a 3 pointer.  Elkmont changed to a man defense that put a lot more pressure on the East Limestone Indians that started to cause turnovers.  The race was on and by 4:45 the deficit had shrunk to 56-48.  The Red Devils pulled to within 5 points with a Matthew Barnes' three at 4:30, making the score, 56-51.  At 2:46, the gap was quickly closing at 60-56 and by 2:23 the Devils were within three points.  Skyler Gant sank two free throws to make it 61-60.  With 10 seconds to go, Logan tossed in a three, giving Elkmont the lead, 63-61, with 10 seconds left.  All the defense had to do was stop the Indians one more time but alas the defense broke down as East drove to the basket for an easy layup to tie the game 63-63.

The first overtime saw Cole Glass get the tip but Elkmont wasn't able to convert it into points.  East scored the first 4 points but the Red Devils came back and with 8 sec left in the game, Hayden Huseth added two more points to the score.  This put Elkmont up by 3 with only a few seconds but East Limestone threw up a 40 footer at the buzzer and tied the score 71-71.

Again the ball was tipped by Cole Glass and the teams raced up and down the court.  East was up at 3:02, 75-73.  Daniel hit his last of 5 three pointers for the night, putting Elkmont ahead, 76-75.  Logan was quickly whistled up for his fifth foul at 2:10 on what looked to be a clean block (ref under the basket thought it was a clean block as well - he wasn't the one that made the call), sending him to the bench.  The East Limestone Indians pulled away and won in double overtime 83-78.  Elkmont's leading scorers were Daniel Logan with 18; Cole Glass with 17; Hayden Huseth with 16 and Skyler Gant finished the double digit scorers with 15.

The Elkmont Red Devils mysteriously slipped into a slump after the first quarter of the Danville game last Tuesday and played subpar basketball for the next two games.  It looked like Elkmont would remain in a slump that many worried would continue the rest of the season and see the Red Devils sitting home after a quick exit in the playoffs.  However, it looks like Elkmont may have mysteriously slipped back out of the slump and hopefully have regained their game.  East Limestone did manage to beat the Devils in double overtime but seeing Elkmont overcome a 20 point deficit in a little over a 9 minute time frame and have several chances to win is very encouraging for the rest of the season.  West Morgan comes to visit, January 13, for an Area game.  Hopefully, the Red Devils have kicked the monkey off their backs, ended the slump and will get back on track this Friday.
