MISSED OPPORTUNITIES AND COULD HAVE BEENS

The Elkmont Red Devils played the Tanner Rattlers in the Limestone County Basketball Tournament's men's varsity semi-final game, January 26.  The Rattlers were able to pull away to win  67-50.

The Red Devils came out well prepared for this game.  The modified 2-3 zone was very effective in slowing down Tanner's inside game; the majority of Tanner's scoring in most games is within five feet of the basket.  Elkmont scored first with a 3 pointer by Daniel Logan. Cole Glass, the Elkmont center, was whistled up with his second foul within 2 minutes of the start of the game.  He stayed in the game until about 3 minutes left in the quarter when he went to the bench.  Elkmont stepped up and was able to end the quarter leading, 11-10.    The Red Devils went without Glass for the second quarter and missed a opportunity to control the paint and rack up points when Tanner's center was out of the game.   Glass's inside scoring has improved and Tanner would have had a hard time stopping him when Tanner's Jace Haggermaker (6'6" heavy body center) went to the bench.  Elkmont finished up the second quarter tied 20 - 20. (could have been up by 10)

The Red Devils continued to play excellent defense in the second half.  Cole Glass was back on the floor.  Elkmont held the Rattlers to 43 points, (this team has scored over 100 against several schools recently) at the end of the third quarter.  The Red Devils were very much in the game and only down by 4 points when Daniel Logan (whistled for two fouls within 5 seconds) fouled out with 6:37 left in the game.  The wheels came off the bus at this point.  Elkmont had dealt with and been able to overcome the normal "Tanner" whistle but things got very heated in the East Limestone gym as the officiating passed the line of what has become a part of Tanner games for at least the last decade to very Interesting.  Tanner was able to take advantage of that atmosphere and extend their lead into a win, 67-50.  The only Red Devil in double figures was Daniel Logan with 17 points.

The Hill Spirit is not very politically correct and has no problem (after watching the game live and on tape twice) with saying the 4th quarter was not played just between 2 teams and was a black mark on what was a good game.  Matthew Hines (2011 All State and 2A Player of the Year), an excellent player, has been granted the All Star whistle and it is extremely difficult to defend someone who has that special protective bubble; almost every move to the basket (once it gets in the paint) is gifted with a defensive foul.  It is part of the modern game at every level and was certainly a  factor in this game.   The Red Devils played very good defense but missed many scoring opportunities, shooting a lower percentage than in the previous two games.  Coupled with the Cole Glass being out the second quarter, Logan fouling out early in the fourth quarter, Tanner discovering it can shoot 3 pointers and creative officiating,  this game falls in the categories of "it was just another Tanner game" and "what might have been".

The Red Devils will be traveling to Westminster on Monday.  They are playing well and should have a good week.
